Rashee Rice files Texas bankruptcy after crash settlement remains unpaid
The Chiefs receiver’s legal team says garnishments from his salary are not covering the full cost of the 2024 Central Expressway crash.

Rashee Rice, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver involved in a 2024 traffic crash in Dallas, has filed for bankruptcy in Texas. Court documents confirm the filing, which comes as the receiver continues to play in the NFL while managing ongoing civil liabilities from the accident.
Attorney March Lenahan, who represents plaintiff Kathryn Kuykendall, stated that Rice’s paychecks are being garnished. Lenahan told NBC 5 that the majority of the debt Rice owes is still unpaid. Kuykendall was seeking a $1 million settlement after suffering multiple injuries when the Uber she was riding in was struck by Rice’s rented Lamborghini.
Prosecutors determined that the Lamborghini was traveling at 119 miles per hour moments before the impact. In April 2025, Rice and Kuykendall agreed to a $1 million civil settlement. A judge signed a judgment requiring Rice to pay that amount, along with interest and attorney fees.
Rice was released from Dallas County Jail in June after serving 30 days. That incarceration stemmed from a probation violation related to the March 2024 crash on Central Expressway, during which he tested positive for THC. He left the scene before police arrived but later surrendered to an arrest warrant and accepted responsibility for the collision.
In July 2025, Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges. He was sentenced to the 30-day jail term and five years of probation. The court also ordered him to pay the victims’ medical expenses. He is currently in the final year of his rookie contract with the Chiefs.
The NFL suspended Rice for the first six games of the 2025 season after finding he violated its personal conduct policy. The league cited erratic driving as the cause of the crash. He also missed the start of mandatory minicamp due to his time in jail. Since returning, he has played in five of seven games this year, missing two due to injury.
In 2026, Rice has recorded 20 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns. He helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the 2023 season. The team is scheduled to play the New York Jets on Sunday at noon.
