The body of Deputy Adam Sherifi will leave the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office at 2355 N. Stemmons Freeway at approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, October 26. The dignified escort will carry him to Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, Texas, where the public can pay their respects.
The convoy will travel through Dallas County and into Van Zandt County. The route includes Interstate 35, Interstate 45, U.S. Highway 175, Interstate 20, and State Highway 64. The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office asked residents, first responders, and supporters of law enforcement to line the roadways and overpasses along the path. Because the escort contains a limited number of vehicles, officials requested that local fire departments and other emergency services position personnel and equipment on overpasses to show support.
Sherifi, 31, was shot and killed in the line of duty last Tuesday. Investigators say he was serving felony warrants at a home in Canton when a suspect opened fire from inside. The suspect wielded a semiautomatic rifle and discharged approximately 800 rounds during the incident. Canton police Officer Chris Watson was also present and suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm.
Watson has been released from the hospital. He is expected to undergo another surgery as he continues his recovery. Sherifi is survived by two children. In the days following the shooting, the Van Zandt County community has gathered to support the families of both officers. One community member noted that while words cannot ease the pain, the community can stand beside the families so they do not grieve alone.
The Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following the deputy's death. The office stated that the presence and prayers of the community mean more than words can express during this difficult time. The dignified escort marks the beginning of a week of remembrance for the fallen officer.
Sherifi's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Canton. Community members are invited to gather and honor his life and service. The final resting place and specific times for the Wednesday ceremony have not been detailed in the initial statement, but the funeral home will be the focal point for the community's tribute.
