A single household in Oak Cliff has become a focal point for residents this week as people stop to view a Día de los Muertos installation at the corner of Windomere Avenue and 10th Street. The display marks the first year Elvie De La Fuente has created the exhibit, and the response from neighbors has been immediate and emotional.

De La Fuente built the altar with specific details intended to honor the dead while maintaining a connection to the living. The setup includes marigolds, which are traditionally used to guide spirits, alongside Catrina figures and a central altar. She explained that the arrangement features photos of her own grandparents and great-great-grandparents. She also included a picture of five girls who died in a tragic accident roughly fifteen months ago, noting that they were part of the local community.

Passersby have described the experience as a way to process personal loss. Jenett Vega said the display brought up memories of her father, who passed away ten years ago, and her sister-in-law, who died two years ago. Ayleen Cardona described the tradition as a way to honor the presence of loved ones who once walked the earth, keeping a symbol of their connection alive.

De La Fuente said the reaction from the public has been the most rewarding part of the process. She described the joy people felt when viewing the art as magical and beautiful. The display has served as a gathering point for the neighborhood, allowing residents to share stories of their own departed relatives in a public space.

The installation remains on display at the intersection for residents to visit. The specific dates for the removal of the altar were not specified in the initial reports, but the site has continued to draw foot traffic from the surrounding streets.
