Four people died and 15 others were injured in a series of shootings in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas on Saturday night. The district, known for its music venues and restaurants, experienced the most lethal violence of a weekend that saw armed conflicts across multiple U.S. cities.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that three separate shootings occurred within a 75-minute window. Investigators are currently determining if the incidents are connected. The department increased its police presence in the district before the first shot was fired. No officers were hurt during the response.
Comeaux said authorities made several arrests but did not specify the number of suspects or the charges filed. He described the investigation as complex due to the scale of the scene. "This is a very large and dispersed scene," Comeaux said. "We are interviewing some people that we have arrested at this point, still trying to figure out exactly how it relates to all the shootings here."
The violence in Dallas was part of a pattern of shootings in nightlife districts across the country. Police in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Birmingham, Alabama; Newark, Delaware; and Bloomington, Illinois, also reported incidents in their downtown areas over the same weekend. A total of at least six people were killed in these events, with dozens more wounded.
In Birmingham, one person died and eight were injured outside Legion Field following the Magic City Classic football game. Michael Pickett, chief of the Birmingham Police Department, said the shooting happened near vendors along Graymont Avenue after most spectators had left. Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31-28 in front of approximately 70,000 fans. Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman confirmed one person was taken into custody and multiple weapons were secured.
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot near the University of Delaware campus on Saturday night. All six were transported to hospitals, and police reported no updates on their conditions as of Sunday afternoon. Main Street in the city remained closed for several hours. In Bloomington, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman died and another woman was critically injured in a shooting near Illinois Wesleyan University early Sunday morning. Six others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Two additional shootings occurred in Arkansas early Sunday. In Little Rock, a man died and several others were injured near a strip mall southwest of the city. In Fayetteville, six people with gunshot wounds were taken to hospitals. Police in Fayetteville said a preliminary investigation indicates a fight preceded the shooting. No arrests have been made in the Fayetteville incident.
Two people also died in separate incidents at Spirit Halloween stores on Friday. In Fairfield, California, a 31-year-old pregnant woman was killed in a targeted attack inside a mall location. Six others were injured. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot in a store near Detroit. Another man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by bystanders while officers detained him.
