Irving, Jennifer Espinoza, a science teacher at MacArthur High School, has been named a 2026 Yale Educator. The award, presented by the Yale University Office of Undergraduate Admissions, recognizes educators worldwide who inspire their students.

Yale received 307 nominations this year from 38 states and 20 countries. From that pool, the university selected 50 teachers and 17 counselors to receive the honor. Espinoza is one of the 50 teachers chosen.

Paola Rosas, a 2026 MacArthur graduate and current Yale student, nominated her former teacher. Rosas said Espinoza helped her discover a passion for science, a path that led her from MacArthur High School to Yale University. Rosas is now studying at Yale and may major in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology.

Espinoza has worked in education for 21 years, with the last 14 spent at MacArthur High School. She currently teaches AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and Honors Chemistry. She also serves as the science department chair and coaches the Academic Decathlon.

Rosas described Espinoza as a teacher who was passionate about her subject and deeply caring toward her students. She recalled that Espinoza often worked behind the scenes, offering tutoring before and after school. On Saturdays, Espinoza held review sessions to help students prepare for exams.

“She was doing so much behind the scenes to support every one of her students,” Rosas said. “So I believed it was her turn to be given that same amount of gratitude.”

Espinoza said the recognition meant more because it came from a former student. “Some people only dream about meeting their favorite scientist,” Espinoza said. “I get to teach my favorite scientists every day.”
