Rosa Hernandez Rivera died on Thursday morning, ending a two-week period in which her family hoped for a recovery. The 32-year-old mother of five sustained a head wound during an apparent road rage incident that occurred on Oct. 22. She was driving a minivan with her boyfriend and her two youngest children when the shooting took place.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. near West 47th Street and South Western Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood. An unidentified driver pulled alongside Rivera's vehicle and opened fire. Surveillance video from local businesses captured the event. The footage shows a minivan being followed closely by another vehicle. Alderman Raymond Lopez of the 15th Ward stated that the driver appeared enraged by an event that occurred several blocks prior.

Sonia Hernandez, Rivera's sister, described the immediate aftermath. The five children, particularly the two who were in the car with their mother, are dealing with the trauma. Hernandez said the family members are processing the loss differently but remain in shock.

"They're very traumatized about the situation. The same as all the family. We're still in shock. We can't believe it. We were hoping for a miracle, but unfortunately. Not the case this time," Hernandez said.

The family viewed Rivera as a dedicated mother who worked for her children. Hernandez recalled visiting her sister on the day before Rivera died. "I had a chance to say bye yesterday and today in the morning," Hernandez said.

Police are investigating the incident as a homicide. No one is in custody as of Thursday night. Hernandez urged the responsible party to come forward, noting that her sister was the victim this time, but another person could be next.

Cook County Crime Stoppers has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.
