Homeowners in three North Texas communities will soon have access to battery backup systems from Base Power. The Austin-based energy startup recently signed a deal with Dallas-based Hillwood Communities to equip nearly 6,500 homes with the technology. At full build-out, the program will cover approximately 9,500 residences in the three subdivisions.
Base Power opened a local office and warehouse in Grapevine in August 2025. The company started with around 10 full-time employees at that time. It now employs more than 100 people in North Texas. Over half of the company's total customer base is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
The partnership affects new and existing homeowners in specific neighborhoods. These include Treeline by Hillwood in Justin, Pecan Square by Hillwood in Northlake, and Harvest by Hillwood in Argyle and Northlake. Base Power will own and service the batteries. Homeowners will pay for the service through preferred pricing arrangements with the local electric cooperative, CoServ.
Each Base Core unit holds 39.2 kilowatt-hours of energy. The system provides up to 36 hours of backup power, depending on household usage. The backup activates automatically when grid power fails. The company is currently installing about 100 of these units at single-family homes daily, with 50 of those installations occurring in the DFW area.
Base Power co-founder and COO Justin Lopas noted that the U.S. grid requires additional capacity. He stated that the company uses a novel method to add this capacity quickly. In August, investors valued the company at $13 billion following a $1 billion Series D funding round. Base Power expects to deploy roughly one gigawatt-hour of capacity by the end of the year.
Andrew Pieper, senior vice president of Hillwood Communities, said the partnership offers residents a cost-effective way to prepare for weather-related outages. He added that the system supports the broader electric grid. Base Power co-founder and CEO Zach Dell described the initiative as building energy infrastructure where people live. The partners plan to extend the program to future Hillwood developments in Denton and Pilot Point.
