Irving-based energy advisory firm 5 has completed its acquisition of Legacy Energy Group, a Virginia-based provider of energy management services. The purchase price was not disclosed. This move expands 5's operational reach into the territories of two major grid managers.
Legacy Energy, founded in 1999, manages more than $300 million in annual purchases of natural gas and electricity. The company serves clients in the industrial, commercial, and multifamily sectors. Its headquarters is located within the boundaries of PJM, the nation's largest electric grid operator.
The acquisition also brings 5 into the service area of MISO, a grid manager serving 15 states and Manitoba. PJM operates in all or part of 13 states and the District of Columbia.
Brian Hayduk, co-founder and CEO of 5, stated that Legacy's knowledge of PJM and its subject-matter expertise were key factors in the deal. Hayduk noted that energy is becoming a larger portion of corporate operational costs. He said this drives demand for partners who can help clients manage the complexities of power markets.
Hayduk emphasized that Legacy's experience in utility-bill management and tariff-rate analysis will help 5 support clients across a wider range of energy needs. This is 5's fourth acquisition. It is the second deal since Chicago-based Energize Capital invested in the firm last year. Energize did not disclose the investment amount, describing it only as significant.
The Legacy team, including President Michael Housley and Senior Vice President Thomas Ihrig, will now operate under 5. Legacy's office in Warrenton, Virginia, approximately 45 miles west of Washington, D.C., will remain open. The merger brings 5's total headcount to more than 100.
Housley said joining 5 strengthens the company's analytic capabilities and expands behind-the-meter services for clients. The combined teams will merge Legacy's UtiliViz utility data management system with 5's Level5 energy data platform. This integration aims to provide customers with trusted, data-driven advice.
