Supporters of U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico filled the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas on Thursday. The gathering marked the latest event in a campaign that has drawn national attention as Election Day approaches on Nov. 3. Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton in what has become the most expensive nonpresidential race in U.S. history.
Talarico told the crowd that his opponents are intensifying their efforts in the final days of the election. He characterized the pressure as a sign of concern within the opposing camp. “In the final days of this election they are coming at us with everything they’ve got,” Talarico said. “They are scared. They are terrified. They see what we see. That we’re about to win this elections on November third.”
The rally was held jointly with supporters of Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic candidate for governor. Hinojosa challenged incumbent Greg Abbott and focused her remarks on public education and health care. She urged Texans to actively shape the state’s future rather than waiting for change. “Texas is a world economic powerhouse and it is the people of Texas who built that power,” Hinojosa said. “But the thing about power is that nobody is going to give it to us. We have to take it back. And that is what this is election is about, taking back that power.”
Texas Democrats view this cycle as a rare chance to win a statewide seat. The last time a Democrat won a statewide U.S. Senate election in Texas was in 1988. Talarico’s campaign has emphasized affordability, education, immigration, and border security. He has described his background as a multigenerational Texan, former middle school teacher, and Presbyterian seminarian. His team has also focused on what they call political corruption.
Attendees cited economic conditions and the direction of the country as primary motivators for their support. Ralph Lopez, a Texas resident, said he believes officials must prioritize constituent needs. “What I see with this current administration, a lot of them, especially on the right is it’s for them, it’s not for the people,” Lopez said. Another resident, Molina, identified democracy as their top concern but noted that gas prices and inflation remain important issues. “My top concern is that we continue to be a democracy,” Molina said. “But in terms of other issues, gas is still expensive, inflation is still around.”
President Donald Trump made three trips to Texas this month to support Paxton. Talarico concluded his address by invoking the biblical story of David and Goliath. He emphasized the role of Dallas voters in the final stretch of the campaign.
