State Sen. Royce West has identified three moments as the most important in his political career. He listed his initial election to the state Senate, the presidency of Barack Obama, and the midterm elections this past Tuesday that shifted Texas to a Democratic majority. West has represented his Dallas-area district for more than three decades. Much of that time was spent serving in minority status within legislative committees.

During a recent interview, West described his previous role as vice chair and chair of committees. He noted that he often had little real input into the agenda for committee consideration. He said he understood the limitations of that position but would not wish that experience on others. Now that Democrats hold the majority, West said the party is moving quickly to place staff and address unfinished business.

West identified health care as a primary objective for the next legislative session. He pointed to the high rate of uninsured residents in Texas, specifically highlighting the number of children without coverage. He expressed hope that Democrats and Republicans can work together on this issue. He also placed affordability high on his list of priorities. West stated that he believes the state needs to increase the minimum wage.

Education remains another immediate focus for the senator. West said he is filing a bill to eliminate vouchers. He argued that the public school system is the structure that the state must continue to support. He also aims to reinstate a procedural rule known as the two-thirds rule. This rule previously required lawmakers from both parties to collaborate on legislation.

West noted that women will hold some of the most powerful positions in the state government. He observed that the governor and the lieutenant governor are both women. He expressed hope that the speaker of the house will also be a woman. West said these leaders will bring expertise as skilled public servants. He emphasized that they will bring their own priorities and that lawmakers should ensure children do not continue to squabble but instead come together.

The senator advised that words do not matter as much as action. He stated that if the new leadership claims it will deal with affordability, it must follow through. He encouraged Texans to remain engaged in the political process. He urged voters to hold elected officials accountable for keeping the promises that secured their elections. West also joined the Best Southwest Partnership to host a town hall focused on data centers. This event is scheduled for Nov. 14 at the University of North Texas at Dallas.
