Fairfield Police Department Chief Dan Marshall announced a manhunt for the shooter who killed one person and wounded six others at a Spirit Halloween store on Friday night. The incident occurred near 8:30 p.m. local time inside the Solano Town Center mall. Marshall stated at a news conference that at least three of the victims are currently in critical condition. All injured parties were transported to a nearby hospital. The chief offered no further details regarding the specific individuals shot.
Marshall told reporters that detectives are diligently working to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for the event. He described the incident as heartbreaking and said the department's thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families. The mall location in Fairfield, California, remains the focal point of the active search for the gunman.
David Bernal spoke with KCRA regarding his wife's experience during the shooting. He explained that she was inside the store when the shooter opened fire. She escaped through an emergency exit located on the other side of the mall along with several other people. Bernal said his wife is at home and still in shock. He quoted her description of the sound as five big bangs, big ones, like loud.
The Fairfield shooting occurred hours after a separate incident at a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights, Michigan. In that case, a 21-year-old Detroit resident was shot and later died from his injuries at a local hospital. Madison Heights police reported that the alleged shooter, also a 21-year-old man, was taken into custody after being assaulted by several bystanders. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. Police anticipate seeking criminal charges based on the evidence gathered thus far.
