Michigan Senator Abdul El-Sayed calls Taylor Swift's 'Life of a Showgirl' a creative risk
The newly elected U.S. senator said the expanded album shows the artist stepping outside her usual genre while acknowledging it may not be her best work.

Abdul El-Sayed, the newly elected U.S. senator from Michigan, told a podcast audience that Taylor Swift’s album 'The Life of a Showgirl' is a bold artistic experiment rather than her strongest musical effort. El-Sayed made these comments during an appearance on Liz Plank’s 'Boy Problems' podcast on Oct. 28. He discussed 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,' the expanded edition of Swift’s original release.
El-Sayed, who will become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, noted that his daughter is a devoted fan of Swift. When Plank asked if the album was 'actually good,' El-Sayed offered a nuanced response. He described Swift as one of the most self-aware artists of her generation. He argued that after making music for many years, Swift wanted to push the boundaries of her own genre.
'Of course not,' El-Sayed said in response to whether the new material was as good as Swift's most natural work. 'But is it an artist reflecting a different or flexing a different muscle and taking a risk? Yes.' He added that the public should empower artists when they push the boundaries of their own creative frames. He suggested that the album should be viewed as evidence of an artist evolving rather than playing it safe.
Swift first released 'The Life of a Showgirl' in October 2025. She followed that release with 'The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore' in September 2026, which added four new songs. El-Sayed said he imagined Swift pushing against the walls of her previous style. He stated, 'I think that’s what she was doing.' Plank responded to his assessment by calling it the most interesting take she had heard on the album.
This is not the first time El-Sayed has engaged with Swift’s fan base during his campaign. On July 3, the day of Swift’s wedding celebrations, El-Sayed posted a social media video inspired by Swift’s 2008 hit 'You Belong With Me.' In the video, he danced while on-screen lyrics compared him to his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers. He captioned the post, 'Happy Taylor wedding…err, July 4th weekend!' The clip received widespread attention online.
El-Sayed’s comments on the music coincide with his transition to the Senate. He won Michigan’s high-profile Senate race earlier this year. His podcast appearance occurred shortly after his election. The discussion centered on Swift’s creative choices and the public’s expectations for her work. El-Sayed maintained that artists need support when they try new approaches. His perspective frames the new album as a deliberate step away from Swift’s traditional sound.
