Bobby Brown is 88 years old. Despite a severe illness that confined him to a bed for months, he has returned to playing golf.
Brown was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease that worsens over time. Following an unrelated neck surgery, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He could no longer walk from his car to his bedroom. Brown said he had to call a friend to carry him into bed because he could not manage the distance on his own.
For several months, Brown relied on oxygen tanks to breathe. He remained unable to leave his bed. His doctors and family members did not expect him to recover his previous level of mobility.
Respiratory therapists Ty Whitting and Danna Carter from Texas Health Arlington Memorial worked with Brown to improve his lung function. Whitting said the team focused on helping patients regain their breath. They taught Brown specific techniques, including pursed lip breathing. This method involves inhaling through the nose and exhaling slowly through the mouth, similar to blowing out candles.
Brown also performed basic cardio exercises. He progressed step by step until he could stand and swing a club again. Brown said he loves the camaraderie and competition of the sport. He stated that he loves being out on the course and enjoying the game he has played for decades.
