Tampa Bay Rays players left the field at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings on Tuesday night. The victory snapped an eight-game winning streak for Milwaukee and kept the Rays alive in the World Series. The team avoided a sweep in the fourth game of the best-of-seven matchup.
The Rays fell behind 3-0 in the series after losing the first two games at American Family Field and the third game at their home stadium. Tuesday’s win forced a fifth game. The next contest is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, also at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski is slated to start for the Brewers. He is the favorite to win the National League Cy Young Award.
The Rays are the fifth team in 26 World Series histories to win the fourth game after starting the series 0-3. The four previous teams to reach this point all lost the fifth game. In broader postseason history, 43 teams have been down 3-0 in a best-of-seven series. Only one team, the 2004 Boston Red Sox, won the series after facing that deficit. The Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.
The Brewers had been on a path to become the second team ever to sweep both a league championship series and the World Series. The Rays’ Tuesday win ended that run. The series now stands tied at 3-1 in games won, with Milwaukee holding the lead. Both teams will prepare for the decisive Game 5 on Wednesday night.
