Israeli military forces began restricting movement in several West Bank cities on Monday night.
The measures coincide with the upcoming vote for the 26th Knesset. The stated goal is to lower the risk of friction between Israelis and Palestinians while the election is active.
Brig. Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF's Judea and Samaria Division, has directed operations at multiple sites over the past day. His team is preparing for Election Day, which falls on a public holiday. The IDF anticipates a high volume of Israeli visitors to local hiking sites during this period.
The primary method involves what the military terms breathing closures and temporary roadblocks. These controls allow regulated movement around specific cities, towns, and villages identified as potential flashpoints for violence. Extra troops are being positioned to secure hiking areas where visits were arranged in advance.
Reinforcements have also been stationed along the security barrier. Officials cite concerns that attackers could infiltrate Israel during the holiday. The IDF decided on Monday night to boost its presence in this area to counter that threat.
Arrest operations were launched in the Qalqilya, Jenin, and Nablus districts. Security forces conducted field interrogations and warned individuals accused of incitement. These actions aim to increase pressure on the ground amid fears of new attacks.
A security official told Walla on Tuesday morning that engineering units are preparing to demolish illegal structures. The target list includes homes of terrorists and specific monuments. The effort is designed to combat incitement and prevent copycat attacks.
Operations are running alongside a campaign by the Paratroopers Brigade headquarters to combat nationalist crime in the Shiloh Valley. Col. Roi Zweig leads this effort within the Binyamin Regional Brigade's area of responsibility. Despite these measures, security forces could not stop overnight incidents of settler violence in the Binyamin region. Palestinian vehicles were torched during these events.
Heller emphasized the need for closer coordination among security agencies on Election Day. This includes the Israel Police, the Israel Border Police, and the Shin Bet. The objective is to ensure a rapid operational response to any incidents that arise.
