Nebraska enters its matchup against Illinois with a record of 2-4 against head coach Bret Bielema. The Huskers aim to break a three-game losing streak that has seen their offense score just seven points during meaningful play in recent contests. Illinois arrives in Lincoln on a three-game winning streak, having defeated Oregon earlier this season.

Quarterback Anthony Colandrea has struggled with his passing accuracy during the losing streak. He has completed fewer than 60% of his passes in all three losses. Game on Paper ranks his expected points added per dropback 81st in the country. His passing success rate sits at 63rd overall. The Huskers currently rank fourth in the Big Ten in pass attempts per game, a volume that may not be sustainable if efficiency remains low.

Illinois quarterback Katin Houser presents a different challenge for the Nebraska defense. Houser, a transfer from East Carolina, ranks 34th in the country in expected points added per dropback. His performance splits sharply by half. He ranks in the 93rd percentile for expected points added per play in the first half but falls to the 42nd percentile in the second half. This pattern could test a Nebraska defense that has shown signs of fatigue in late-game situations.

Nebraska’s rushing attack has slowed to a crawl in its last two outings. The Huskers failed to reach 100 rushing yards against Oregon and failed to score on the ground against Washington. Star running back Jamal Rule, who has been limited by injury, carried the ball 13 times against Washington and averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Rule’s 65% of his touches have occurred in the first half, a trend that may shift if he returns to full health.

Illinois coach Rob Aurich described his team's ground game as not flashy, but consistent. The Fighting Illini average 5.2 yards per carry, ranking fourth in the conference. Lead back Aidan Laughery is tied with Rule for the third-highest average in the Big Ten at 6.3 yards per carry. Illinois relies on power backs Javari Bennet and Jordan Anderson to manage the clock. Their average third-down distance is 5.73 yards, the eighth-shortest in the nation.

The Nebraska Blackshirts have forced the sixth-longest average third-down distance in the country. This mismatch offers the Huskers a chance to disrupt Illinois’s rhythm. If the defense can keep the Illini’s big backs off the field, it may limit the damage from their consistent offensive approach.

Nebraska’s defensive scheme will face a 3-3-5 alignment from Illinois. This structure features eight-man drops that could neutralize the deep passing threats Nebraska used against Washington. Coach Dana Holgorsen indicated that the offense should prioritize quicker throws such as slants and perimeter passes. Illinois allows the highest opponent completion percentage in the country, creating an opportunity for Colandrea to string together time-consuming drives.

The game is scheduled for a prime time slot, a setting where Nebraska has historically struggled. The Huskers must end a losing streak that has reinforced a narrative of November fragility. A win would provide relief from the pressure of facing a well-coached opponent in a high-profile national broadcast.
