A sharp object ended the life of a Jordanian security officer on Thursday near the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman. The Jordanian Public Security Directorate labeled the incident a terrorist act. The victim was on duty when the assailant struck. The attack occurred in the capital city, adding to regional security concerns.
This violence follows a string of recent incidents in the kingdom. Gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church in southern Jordan just weeks ago. That attack killed nine people and wounded dozens. The proximity of the latest incident to a diplomatic mission raises questions about local security posture.
The Public Security Directorate stated that a preliminary investigation shows the attacker planned to target officers from the General Security Directorate. The agency described the act as a cowardly terrorist attack. The assailant has been arrested. State-run Al-Mamlaka TV reported that the attacker tried to take the weapon from the deceased officer.
A second security officer stepped in to help. Both the attacker and the second officer sustained injuries in the struggle. The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed the event took place in its vicinity. The embassy did not provide further details on its specific role in the incident.
Mohamed al-Momani, the Jordanian government spokesperson, addressed the event on X. He said the prime minister is closely monitoring the security response. Al-Momani called the attack an assault on the dignity of the state. The security services are currently managing the scene and the investigation.
