Barksdale Middle School changed its daily operations on Tuesday after a coach found a bullet on the tennis courts at the end of the school day. Superintendent Dr. Mark Foust notified parents via letter that the school is adjusting its routine in response to the new discovery.

The district implemented three immediate changes to student safety. First, buses will now drop students off on the west side of the building instead of the previous location. Second, outdoor activities have been moved to the front of the school or indoors to minimize exposure. Third, officials launched an investigation into the specific circumstances of the bullet’s arrival on the court.

This incident is the third known occurrence since May. The newly constructed campus is located approximately one mile north of Quail Creek Gun Range. In August, the district filed a lawsuit in Denton County against the range, claiming it failed to take reasonable measures to stop bullets from striking the school. The legal complaint cites two prior incidents of bullet damage to the property.

A temporary restraining order is currently in effect, which prohibits the use of firearms at the range that are capable of reaching the school. Foust stated that Quail Creek Gun Range has an obligation to keep bullets within its property lines. The next court hearing regarding the extension of this order is scheduled for Nov. 5.

The district said it is exploring all legal options to ensure long-term safety for the community. CBS News Texas reached out to the gun range for comment on the latest findings.
