Denton police arrested two men on Monday morning following a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a bicyclist on Sunday night.
Officers responded to the 1700 block of Teasley Lane at approximately 11:44 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, after receiving reports that a vehicle struck a cyclist and left the scene. Medics transported the bicyclist to a local hospital with serious injuries. The dispatch indicated that no aid was rendered at the moment of impact.
Upon arrival, officers found a bicycle with damage consistent with a rear-impact collision. Debris from the vehicle lay scattered across the roadway. Police determined that both the cyclist and the vehicle were traveling southbound when the collision occurred. Officers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood to locate the source of the debris.
Investigators found a damaged vehicle in a parking lot at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Sam Bass Boulevard. Two male occupants were inside: a 23-year-old driver and a 21-year-old passenger. Officers observed signs that both men were intoxicated. The driver told officers that they had consumed marijuana, while the passenger stated they had recently left a party.
Police administered standard field sobriety tests to the driver. The report notes that officers observed sufficient clues to indicate intoxication. Both men were booked into the city jail. The driver faces charges of intoxication assault, collision involving personal injury, failure to report a felony with serious bodily injury, and public intoxication non-alcohol. The passenger was booked for failure to report a felony with serious bodily injury and public intoxication non-alcohol.
The Denton Police Department handled 327 service and officer-initiated calls between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. During that same period, officers made 10 arrests. The department continues to process the incident as part of its standard traffic collision investigation.
